Do Downward Private Transfers Enhance Maternal Labor Supply? Evidence from around Europe

چکیده
Do Downward Private Transfers Enhance Maternal Labor Supply? Evidence from around Europe Drawing on a theoretical model of downward private transfers with endogenous labor supply and recursive econometric models based on 2317 mother-daughter pairs from the 2003 SHARE data on 10 European countries, we investigate the impact of private transfers on the career choices of transfer-receiving young mothers. For Europe as a whole, we find a strong positive impact of grandchild care on the labor force participation decision of the mother, but no clear impact of either grandchild care or monetary transfers on the mother’s degree of labor market involvement. The link between family transfers and labor supply exhibits an interesting pattern across institutional settings. Finally, while both recipients and donors with better endowments are more likely to participate in a monetary transaction, time transfers are such that mothers with lower level of human capital tend to assist the professional development of their better endowed daughters. Transfers and Labor Market Behavior of the Elderly in Developing Countries: Theory and Evidence from Vietnam
In this paper we argue that the strategic interaction between the labor supply decision of the elderly and private transfers from their children lowers the opportunity cost of leisure of the elderly. This in turn magnifies the crowding-out effect of public pensions on the labor supply of the elderly. We show that this mechanism has implications for evaluating the crowding-out effect of public p...

We study the wage structure during economic transition in the context of Chinese cities and examine the effect of China’s urban housing reforms on the urban wage structure (1988-2005). We find that these reforms, which untied access to housing from state-sector employment, shifted approximately 17% of the labor force from the state sector to the private sector, increasing the private sector lab...
متن کاملInformal Networks, Institutions and the “Soap Opera” Constraint
What is the interplay between informal networks, such as those that facilitate risk-sharing among households, and institutions such as public transfers and formal financial intermediation? Much of the existing literature on informal networks in economics focuses on either altruism or strategic mechanisms for their formation and maintenance. This approach stands in sharp contrast to perspectives...
متن کاملReconsidering Union Wage Effects: Surveying New Evidence on an Old Topic
I examine evidence on private sector union wage gaps in the United States. The consensus opinion among labor economists of an average union premium of roughly 15 percent is called into question. Two forms of measurement error bias downward standard wage gap estimates. Match bias results from Census earnings imputation procedures that do not include union status as a match criterion. Downward bi...

Health financing strategies that incorporate financial incentives are being applied in many low- and middle-income countries, and improving maternal and neonatal health is often a central goal. As yet, there have been few reviews of such programmes and their impact on maternal health. The US Government Evidence Summit on Enhancing Provision and use of Maternal Health Services through Financial ...
